Nymans Gardens Wedding in Sussex | Cendy & Alex

Cendy and Alex’s wedding at Nymans Gardens was an intimate, relaxed day with mix of Malaysian and English traditions. They loved the idea of an outdoor, laid-back wedding surrounded by gardens and history and Nymans felt like the right place for that. I really loved the flow of this wedding. It didn’t feel rushed, which so often happens when timelines are too tight. We started the day at Whytings Stud Barn, around a 25-minute drive from Nymans Gardens, where both Cendy and Alex got ready together. There were lots of games and laughter — it was a genuinely fun, relaxed morning. They chose to have a first look earlier in the day before heading to the venue. We also arrived at Nymans a little earlier to do a few couple portraits in the gardens, which meant that once guests arrived, Cendy and Alex could fully enjoy reception drinks with family and friends without disappearing for photos. The ceremony took place at 3pm in the Loggia, followed by confetti, a champagne tower, drinks and garden games in the Sunk Garden. About 20 minutes before guests moved inside for the wedding breakfast, we spent around 15–20 minutes on group photos. After that, everyone moved into the Riding House Restaurant for a buffet-style wedding breakfast at 5pm. Speeches and a traditional Malaysian Yam Seng toast followed, along with cake cutting, the first dance and a ceilidh that carried on into the evening. If you are planning wedding at Newma Gardens here are some useful information :

Outdoor wedding ceremony setup at the Loggia in the Sunk Garden at Nymans Gardens

The ceremony: the Loggia in the Sunk Garden

All ceremonies at Nymans take place at the Loggia, inside the Sunk Garden. It’s a stone structure with open arches, partly sheltered, and surrounded by planting that changes with the seasons. Guests sit inside the Loggia and on the lawn just outside, all facing the ceremony.

Reception: drinks and canapés in the Sunk Garden

The Sunk Garden is also where drinks and canapés usually take place. This is a great space for lawn games or a champagne tower. At Cendy and Alex’s wedding, the champagne tower happened straight after confetti.

Wedding breakfast & evening: Riding House Restaurant

The Riding House Restaurant is where the wedding breakfast and evening reception take place. It’s a mix of modern and original features, with doors opening out into a courtyard.

  • Around 60 guests can sit comfortably for the meal
  • Up to 100 guests works well for the evening
  • Music is allowed until 11:30pm

Catering at Nymans

Nymans works with approved local caterers who know the space and the kitchen setup. Food styles that tend to work well here include:

  • Buffets
  • Sharing-style meals
  • Informal seated dinners
  • Outdoor dining for smaller groups

Weather plans at Nymans

Nymans is an outdoor venue, even in the rain. There is no fully indoor ceremony option you can switch to at the last minute. If it rains:

  • The ceremony still takes place at the Loggia
  • Guests on the lawn will need umbrellas
  • Drinks and games can move into the Riding House
  • Dining and the evening reception are fully indoors

Photography at Nymans

From a photography point of view, Nymans is a great location. I love the mix of architecture and gardens with impressive exotic plants. There are many areas to photograph, all within easy walking distance. For relaxed, natural couple portraits, I usually recommend allowing around 30 minutes during your reception drinks. Another good option is to plan a first look before the ceremony and take a few couple portraits before guests arrive. This allows you to enjoy uninterrupted drinks reception time with family and friends after the ceremony. If you’re planning group photos but don’t want to spend hours on them, I recommend keeping the list to a maximum of 8 group combinations and allowing around 20 minutes, ideally just before guests move in for the meal. If timing allows, I also suggest setting aside around 15 minutes for sunset couple portraits. If you’re lucky with the light, it’s well worth it.

FAQ

Is Nymans open to the public during weddings?

Yes. It’s a National Trust property. Weddings take place in designated areas which will be managed during the ceremony

Is there an indoor ceremony backup?

No. The Loggia is the ceremony space. Seating inside offers some cover, but it remains an outdoor ceremony.
