I don’t just turn up and wait behind a tree. Capturing a proposal takes preparation — a lot of it. Every couple I work with gets the same level of care and attention to detail, because this isn’t just a photo shoot. It’s a huge moment in your life, and I want to make sure it's documented beautifully, without stress or confusion.
How it works
Whether you already have a location in mind or need help deciding, I’m here to guide you. I know Bath, Bristol, and Somerset very well — the quiet corners, the beautiful light, the best times of day. If you already have a spot picked, I’ll go out ahead of time, scout it, and send you pictures of the best angles and exactly where you’ll need to stand. You’ll get detailed instructions — where to walk, what time, when to give me the signal. We’ll be texting before the shoot so I know when you're approaching. Nothing is left to chance. If you’re not sure where to propose, I’ll suggest a few l locations and help you choose the one that works well. I’ve even helped with extras like flowers (delivered to me by a local Bath florist) or bringing a small bottle of champagne to use after the moment — or for a champagne spray photo if you're into that!
Surprise Proposal or Planned Couple Session?
Some people want a completely surprise proposal — I stay hidden, photograph from a distance, and the partner has no idea. It’s raw, honest, in the moment. But keep in mind: it means they might not be “photo-ready” — no makeup, casual clothes, possibly a bit shocked. So I always recommend planning the day so your partner feels good — say you’re going out for a nice meal after a walk or exploring a location, so they dress up a bit and feel great.
Another option is a couple session with a proposal included — this works beautifully. Your partner knows you’re doing a shoot (so they’re relaxed and prepared), and then you ask the question partway through. I can photograph that moment as close as needed and capture every emotion without missing a thing. It’s easier to time and plan, and the energy is still real . Both ways work — we’ll choose the one that suits you best.
After the Proposal
Once the proposal happens, we’ll usually spend about an hour to an hour and a half wandering together for couple portraits. Sometimes it’s more, sometimes less — I keep it flexible and relaxed.
I’ll have already scouted great portrait spots nearby, so the shoot flows naturally. We’ll chat, walk, and take our time. I gently direct when needed, but I’m always reading the energy — some couples are shy, some are playful. I adjust to what feels right for you, and capture the in-between moments that really show who you are together.
