Fly and Joe first met while working in the theatre—Fly as a set designer and Joe as a carpenter. Their creative backgrounds played a central role in their wedding, with every detail reflecting their love for storytelling, design, and Lord of the Rings.

Joe built a stunning circular wooden arch for the ceremony, while Fly curated props that brought Middle-earth to life. Over Barn was the perfect venue for their vision, offering a relaxed, rustic setting that complemented their theme beautifully. This barn wedding in Gloucester provided the ideal backdrop for their whimsical celebration.

The ceremony was filled with personal and unique touches. Fly’s father sang her down the aisle dressed in a kilt, accompanied by her cousin playing the harp. Their best friend officiated a humorous and heartfelt blessing ceremony, which kept everyone smiling.

A particularly memorable moment was the arrival of the rings—floating down from the balcony on a weighted helium balloon for guests to bless by passing it around before the couple exchanged them.

Their creativity shone through every detail. The wedding cake, designed by their talented friend, featured a topper depicting Joe rescuing Fly from a set design—a nod to how their relationship began. To make the moment even more special, the cake was cut with a family heirloom sword that had been passed down through generations. It was an unforgettable and symbolic addition to their day, adding a touch of legacy and drama to the celebration.

Over Barn Wedding Photography in Gloucester

As an Over Barn wedding photographer, capturing Fly and Joe's wedding day was an absolute joy. I arrived at noon to document Fly getting ready in the bridal suite near the barn, surrounded by her friends and family .Everyone were helping to set up the Lord of the Rings theme, adding a personal touches that made the day even more special.

Following their heartfelt and humour-filled ceremony, I focused on capturing candid moments as guests congratulated the couple. We stepped outside the barn for a confetti shot before moving into group photos and reception drinks.

While the barn was transformed from a ceremony space into the setting for the wedding breakfast, I took Fly and Joe around the farm for a quick couple portrait session. This gave us around 20 minutes to explore the rustic surroundings and create intimate, natural images before returning to capture more candid moments with their guests.

The timeline of the day was filled with memorable highlights:

  • Heartfelt speeches: Touching and humorous toasts during the wedding breakfast (from the best men, mother of the bride, and Joe) brought laughter and tears to everyone in the room. Fly also created a poem to express her love for Joe and thank her family and friends for their support. It was both funny and emotional.
  • Energetic ceilidh dance: The Molecatchers Ceilidh Band got everyone onto the dance floor with lively traditional music that was a hit with all ages.
  • Fire pit gathering: Guests cozied up around the fire pit with marshmallows and blankets, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere under the night sky.
  • Stunning sunset portraits: Before the evening festivities resumed, Fly and Joe made time for sunset portraits. Their generosity with the schedule allowed us to walk to the perfect spot, capturing some of the most magical moments of the day.

Fly and Joe's wedding at Over Barn in Gloucester was an unforgettable celebration of love, creativity, and family. The relaxed atmosphere, combined with their personal touches and the rustic beauty of the venue, made for a truly special day that I was honoured to capture.
