I recently photographed a beautiful proposal at the historic Sudeley Castle, tucked away in the Cotswolds countryside in Gloucestershire. If you're thinking of proposing at this romantic location — whether you're based in the UK or visiting from abroad — this guide will help you plan everything from location choice to permissions and best timings.

Surprise Proposal or Planned Couple Shoot?
First, decide if you want to go for a full surprise or include the proposal as part of a couple session.
1. Surprise Proposal
I’ll help you plan everything—from timing and location to a visual map with directions, where to stand, and a discreet signal so I know when it’s happening. I’ll stay hidden and photograph from a distance, so your partner won’t suspect a thing. Just keep in mind: they might not be dressed up or feel “photo-ready.” I always suggest planning a nice day out—maybe a walk followed by lunch—so they feel good without knowing what’s coming.
2. Couple Session + Proposal
This option is perfect if you’re feeling a bit nervous. You tell them it’s a couple shoot (which is already exciting), and when the moment feels right, you propose. We’ll agree on a signal in advance so I’m ready to capture it up close. It’s more relaxed, easier to time, and still emotional—just with a bit less pressure for both of you.
Both options work beautifully—it’s all about what suits you best.

Best Timing for Proposal photoshoot
The castle is open 10 am to 4 pm. From experience, the best time to propose is between 10:30 am and 11 am—especially on weekdays outside of school holidays. That first hour after opening is usually quite . Around 11:30, it tends to get busier, especially near the chapel ruins and more iconic spots. Tour coaches sometimes arrive at 10 am, but they usually move in a group and don’t hang around too long. Once they pass through, the space often clear again. If you’re feeling nervous or want more privacy, there are quieter areas tucked around the grounds. For example by The St Mary 's Chapel .They might not have the dramatic architecture in the background, but they are more peaceful .
Photography Permission & Price
If you’re planning a proposal at Sudeley Castle and want it professionally photographed, you’ll need to arrange permission in advance. Here’s what you need:
- Photography Permit Fee: £120 (paid directly to the venue). Please check for the most up-to-date pricing by contacting the event manager here
- Entry Tickets: £23 per person (for you, your partner, and your photographer) Check up to date ticket price here These tickets are valid for 30 days—great if your photographer wants to do a scouting visit beforehand.
- Proof of public liability insurance from your photographer
- Drone license and insurance (if aerial photography is requested)
Once approved, you’ll sign a contract and complete payment. The event manager ( Darcey ) has been really helpful and quick to respond.
Weather Tip:
Ask in advance whether you’ll be able to use indoor areas for cover in case of rain . It’s worth checking in advance just in case.

What Happens on the Day
I’ll arrive at the venue early and text you when I'm ready. You will text me back once you’ve arrived. You can either head straight to the proposal spot or enjoy a 20-30 minute wander beforehand. I will be at the location pretending to be a tourist with camera :) After the proposal, we’ll explore the gardens together and take some relaxed portraits. The entire session—from proposal to portraits—usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. It is a relaxed session , nothing too stage . I will give some directions but . My goal is always to capture as many natural moments as possible.
